Chicago. Did a lot. It was sweet. Three new words (more like two old words with new and surprising urgency) being bandied about quite a bit out there: "hipster", "gentrif -y, -ication", and "Popperton". More on those first two later.

Farsheed was good enough to show me Popperton University's mission statement. After looking over the University's goals, structures, and slogans ("Popperton Pays!", "Always Poppin' @ Popperton!" , etc,) I've decided to enroll. I was particularly impressed by Popperton's unique combination of structure and flexibility, and by its virtually unlimited course offerings. The University's "no-class, no-grade, no-campus" approach seems perfect for where I'm at. The unique "non-binding" enrollment will allow me to take short-term courses here in DC over the next few weeks. The weight of my coursework will focus on business management/personal capital, although I'll also sign up for continuing courses on Japanese and cello(emphasis on soul/R&B bass and Latin bass). Also, after tasting Charlie D's "Chicago's World-Renowned 8-hour Marinara", Dennis' pear n' walnut salad and some pepper-honey cornbread courtesy of Aaron, I'll prolly be looking for a suitable cooking course.

The business management/personal capital program requires attending a few SBA/SCORE sessions here in DC, a short internship with a club in NE, conversations, and a book about finance/accounting. Quick clarification: Popperton offers an untraditional 'non-professor' learning style. In place of professors, Popperton recommends 'conversations'. Recognizing that knowledge is distributed throughout societies, web-like, with no single individual holding any monopoly, students are encouraged to make connections with people in relevant fields. In doing so, students tap into broader networks of knowledge and experience, increasing their own flexibility and creativity.

btw, if you think Popperton might be right for you, you should get in touch with founder/student Farsheed. If you don't already know him and need contact info, holler.

Nice course selection there. As recommended by Dr. Popperson himself, I've found writing in notebook(s) helps. Notes for each class, reactions/personal opinions, etc...good for keeping track of where you are at and for future reference.

man. uchicago needs some institutional culture change in the direction of popperton's. i'm jealous. instead of "where fun comes to die" you guys are "always poppin'." your official food should be poppy seed bagels. or that could be the mascot. or penguins; mr. popper's penguins.
