Friday 9/19. Ronny's.

Raise High The Roof Beam, ATLATL, Frigates.

I cheated and walked two blocks rather than bike to this punk rock dive-bar with garage/venue attached that's just around the corner on California. I was worrying about the show all day, and have to confess that fear influenced my decision to enjoy an ice-cream sunday across the street while the opening band played their hearts out no doubt.

Inside the converted venue/garage, the indie college kids did the indie college thing, and the closing band Frigates played an enjoyable, self-assured set that included hand claps, fun rhythmic patterns, vocal canon (!?), and tribal feathers in the lead singers' hair. Oh The Irony. White folks with tribal feathers! -.-

Good-natured elitist put-downs aside, Ronny's is great because it has an 'anyone can play' vibe. Both the bar and venue seem sanctuary to misfit musicians and souls young and old in common need of cheap drink and cheap rent alike. Which is a comfort for myself and the musicians I know who are, as MJ would say, antigenre.
