Here's the route. Bicycle lanes almost the whole way. 18th was a mistake because of scary bridge; took Roosevelt Road returning, much better.

Reggies is a monstrous, million-dollar build-out rock and roll mega-plex. Glass exterior, two separate venues separated by a staircase and a huge music merch shop. On the second floor a record store. All sleekly, calculatingly vintage rock and roll. The experience package. Dark side of the music biz notwithstanding, the Rock Room at Reggies would be fabulously fun venue to play. And good fries.
The Story of Everest. A younger trio, unabashedly amateurish yet with the biggest draw of the night. The bartender urged me not to let the unusually (so he claimed) small Monday night crowd (total 9) inform my opinion of Reggies.
Glass Trees. An older trio, their age and obvious confidence raised my hopes. Dashed. Generic, uninspired, sleepy, drummer-fueled rock.
Heligoats. Excellent solo performance, vocal/guitar. Obviously enjoying himself thoroughly, his after-beat guitar work lent a lighthearted feel to lyrics that held this listener's attention. "Amy/you found me in the woods/like you would/in all those books you read/but you never learn..."
Future Kings Of Nowhere. Acoustic/indie/two step/fun/energy/feelgood rock. Out of Durham NC. Young REM meets the Weakerthans. I surprised myself by knowing one of their tunes, What You Don't Know Might Kill Me, probably from WNUR Chicago Sound Experiment's New Rock radio program. "It's kind of amazing/the things that can change/from alone to in love/ in the course of a day....But you don't even know that I've been running/completely unaware that I'm coming after you..." FKON sounds better live than on myspace.
Heligoats back in Chicago 10/2 at Ronny's and 10/17 at The Orphanage.
Future Kings of Nowhere 10/17 in DC at The Asylum in Adams Morgan.
